Wilderness is defined as a remote and inhospitable region abandoned, or undisturbed by human influence. Its derivative wilder, to perplex, or cause to lose one’s way, affirms nature’s curious duality to be both destructive and restorative.

Alsdorf’s own relationship with Wilderness has long been rooted in the familiar places, objects, and symbolism of her rearing in Upstate New York and Judeo-Christian faith. Its significance is found throughout the human experience: in the fear and deep longing for a boundless frontier where identity is formed through trial and reflection.

"I have always been hooked by the work of Hannah Alsdorf- a good friend, attentive peer, and talented artist with a romantic yet pensive sensibility. Her paintings, sculpture, photography, and installation carry a strong sense of nostalgia with a sincere approach to urgent mark making and storytelling. The urgency felt does not illicit panic, but rather a thoughtful level of insistence. Although the images and palette create an atmosphere of time-spent, their presence is immediate.

“The Space Between is honored to present and celebrate Hannah Alsdorf’s solo B.F.A. exhibition, Wilderness. The title of the show considers the inhospitable region abandoned, while its derivative wilder, to perplex, or cause to lose one’s way, affirms nature’s astonishing duality to be both destructive and restorative. Here at The Space Between we are deeply interested in contradictions and the physical, emotional, and philosophical space that exists between opposites. Wilderness fittingly disputes and compliments the residential location and architectural features of the Space, as well as presents work that propels itself into the undiscovered while offering a careful reflection."

"The Space Between is the physical and emotional separation between people and their communities, between disparate beliefs, between intentions and actions, the past and future, and any number of other things that are not quite what they seem or not yet what they’ll become.”

The Space Between addresses Savannah’s shortage of exhibition spaces and provides a place for emerging artists to launch into a new chapter of their career. Although the space operates full- time as a home and studio, each exhibiting artist transforms the private, residential space into a welcoming event that celebrates community, progress, and achievement."
